Overview

This page is meant to be a quick and simple resource for common questions that are asked often by modders and players.

How can I dump a ROM of Super Mario Bros. to play SMB1R?

  1. Use a cartridge dumper such as a Retrode or RetroFreak. Anything that is from AliExpress websites also have decent dumpers for a good price, so be sure to check those out as well.
  2. Plug in the cartridge dumper inside of your PC with the USB port, and attach your Super Mario Bros. ROM to the dumper. You should obtain two files, an NES and SAV file.

NOTE: Please avoid from using reproduction cartridges, as they are heavily unreliable in terms of data.

  1. Extract the NES folder from the dumper's directory. Do not touch your cartridge during the dumping process.
  2. After having Super Mario Bros. Remastered booted up, ensure that your ROM isn't stored in a compressed file (such as a .zip folder) and drag and drop your legally obtained NES file into the game. The ROM should be extracted and stored in the game's files for safe keeping, and you won't need to do this process again.

To re-iterate, the SMB1R team does not support piracy. Our project requires you to provide your own legal copy of the Super Mario Bros., dumped through legal methods. Please do not ask us for or share illegally obtained ROM files with others.

Where can I find the snapshot builds for SMB1R?

You can find snapshots for future versions on the Discord under #snapshot-builds in the SMB1R category.

Where can I find mods for SMB1R?

If you would like to install Custom Characters or Resource Packs and don't know where to look, visit the GameBanana page, which hosts the large majority of custom user-made content for Super Mario Bros. Remastered.

My sprites are all corrupted, how do I fix it?

You can re-verify your SMB1 ROM by going into settings, scrolling over to the "Data" section, and selecting Re-verify ROM. This will bring up the ROM verification screen once more, and allow you to re-do the ROM verification process.

Alternatively, you can go to the application data folder for Super Mario Bros. Remastered and remove the ROM file manually. The exact location will vary depending on your operating system. On Linux or macOS, the ~ in the path refers to the home directory.

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\SMB1R
  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/SMB1R
  • Linux: ~/SMB1R

If you have portable mode enabled, the folders for your content should be present in the same folder as the executable for SMB1R itself.

Once you are there, you will find a file named baserom.nes, which the game stores during the verification process. Delete that file.

Afterwards, ensure that during the ROM verification process that your ROM isn't compressed inside of a .zip folder or something similar, as this is what causes the corruption in the first place. Your ROM file must be either a USA/JP (sometimes referred to as "World") or EU SMB1 ROM. After you've properly extracted it, you can then drag it onto the application and everything should work correctly from there.

My custom characters are all selecting Luigi/Toad!

On versions 1.0.1 and below, there are only 6 available character slots that may be active at once. If you have more than 6 characters, this bug will occur. Versions 1.0.2 and above have fixed this issue.

I found a bug! Where can I report it?

Please report all bugs and issues you find here. Please try to correctly tag your bug report as well so it is easier for us to sort through and find.

Can I contribute a translation for SMB1R?

Currently, we are not accepting any new translation work for languages not supported by SMB1R. However, if you find a mistake anywhere for any supported languages, feel free to make a pull request or report it as an issue for us to see.

Will VS. Super Mario Bros. be added in the future?

Maybe, but don't count on it any time soon.

Is SMB1R available on iOS/Android/other mobile devices?

If you can figure out how to get it on there, sure. However, we do not natively support it as SMB1R is developed purely as a PC game.

Why are the physics inaccurate/will you implement classic physics?

No. There are several reasons for this, but the main reason is that the classic physics would require a massive re-write of the physics handling code for the player and would most likely make several levels shared under LSS to become impossible to complete due to the changes it would bring. It'd end up being more work than it's worth, and would not

Why does this game have the Star of David in All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.?

That is a Hiranya, a symbol popularized by a Japanese radio show which preceded All Night Nippon on the same station is was hosted on, and has no connection to the Star of David.
