172bedefc9 All the cool platforms support CLASH_DETECTION... 
* configure.ac (CLASH_DETECTION): Define unconditionally.
Every platform using configure supports it.

* src/s/aix4-2.h, src/s/bsd-common.h, src/s/cygwin.h, src/s/darwin.h:
* src/s/gnu-linux.h, src/s/hpux10-20.h, src/s/template.h:
* src/s/usg5-4-common.h: Move CLASH_DETECTION to configure.

* etc/PROBLEMS: Recommend customizing create-lockfiles rather than
recompiling with CLASH_DETECTION unset.

a043d3535a * PROBLEMS (68000 C compiler problems): Remove obsolete section. 
Not only are the compilers long-dead, the obsolete advice
typically doesn't apply to current Emacs sources.

* etc/PROBLEMS: Remove obsolete '#define static' cruft.
* lwlib/xlwmenu.c [emacs]: Include "bitmaps/gray.xbm".
(gray_bitmap_width, gray_bitmap_height, gray_bitmap_bits) [!emacs]:
Remove; all uses replaced with definiens.
* src/s/hpux10-20.h (_FILE_OFFSET_BITS): Don't #undef.
This #undef was "temporary" in 2000; it is no longer needed
now that '#define static' has gone away.
* src/xfns.c, src/xterm.h (gray_bitmap_width, gray_bitmap_height)
(gray_bitmap_bits): Remove; no longer needed.
All uses replaced with definiens.
* src/xterm.c: Include "bitmaps/gray.xbm".

81ac4f3536 Do not preprocess src/Makefile.in. 
* configure.in: Do not preprocess src/Makefile.in.
(cpp_undefs, CPP_NEED_TRADITIONAL): Remove.
(AC_EGREP_CPP): Test no longer needed.
* configure: Regenerate.

* config.bat: Do not preprocess src/Makefile.in.

* make-dist: No more Makefile.c files.

* INSTALL, src/README: Makefiles are not preprocessed.

* src/Makefile.in, src/autodeps.mk, src/deps.mk, src/ns.mk:
Convert comments to Makefile format.

* lib-src/Makefile.in (distclean): No more Makefile.c.
* src/Makefile.in (bootstrap-clean): No more Makefile.c.

* admin/notes/cpp: Remove file.

* admin/quick-install-emacs (AVOID): No more Makefile.c files.

* etc/PROBLEMS, etc/MACHINES: Remove details of cpp problems which can
no longer occur.
