It's never been anything more than pointless complexity

* doc/lispref/processes.texi (Accepting Output):
* src/process.c (Faccept_process_output)
(wait_reading_process_output): Mention that if PROCESS is non-nil,
the return value is about PROCESS, not about other processes.
doc/misc/info.texi (Help-^L): "mode line", "screenful",
stand-alone and Emacs Info both use the mode line.
Use x instead of weird C-x 0 to get rid of help msg
in standalone Info.
* doc/emacs/entering.texi (Entering Emacs): Small fix re initial-buffer-choice.
* doc/emacs/misc.texi (emacsclient Options): Copyedit.
* doc/lispref/os.texi (Startup Summary): Small fix for initial-buffer-choice.
* lisp/startup.el (initial-buffer-choice): Doc fix.
Reset :version (adding an option does not merit a :version bump).

(Help-Small-Screen, Help-]): Do not mention S-SPC.
(Emacs Info Variables): Markup fix.

* etc/NEWS: Related edits.
* calendar/todo-mode.el: Remove dependence on auto-mode-alist,

located outside to todo-directory, and to allow having such files
without them being tied to Todo mode.
(todo-show, todo-move-category, todo-merge-category, todo-find-archive)
(todo-archive-done-item, todo-find-filtered-items-file)
(todo-filter-items, todo-find-item, todo-diary-goto-entry)

variables are set.

(auto-mode-alist): Remove add-to-list calls making Todo file
extensions unrestrictedly tied to Todo modes.

Replace numerous mistaken uses of literal quotes with proper
Texinfo markup.

doc/emacs/frames.texi (Fonts): Clarify which frames are affected by
setting font from the menu and in default-frame-alist.
Likewise for xd_signature in dbusbind.c.
This is more consistent with the usual practice in Emacs, which is
that any non-nil value counts as true.
* doc/lispref/sequences.texi (Bool-Vectors): Coalesce discussion of how to
print them. bool-vector's args need not be t or nil.
* src/alloc.c (Fbool_vector): Don't require args to be t or nil.
* src/dbusbind.c (xd_signature): Likewise, for booleans.
* src/data.c, lisp.h (Qbooleanp):
* src/lisp.h (CHECK_BOOLEAN): Remove. All uses removed.
