* lisp/ffap.el (ffap-latex-mode): Starting with TeXlive 2025, the
kpsewhich utility may return blank lines before the first valid
path for `ffap'. The old behavior of `ffap-latex-mode' was to
simply return the first line of output from kpsewhich (if the
output was nonempty). The fix simply skips all \r and \n chars.

Add option 'ffap-prefer-remote-file' (bug#78925)

This option only affects absolute filenames that are found by
ffap-file-at-point in buffers with remote default directory.
The handling of relative filenames in above buffers remains
unchanged: ffap-file-at-point returns the relative filename,
which can be converted to a remote absolute filename by
subsequent callers (e.g. ffap) using expand-file-name.
* lisp/ffap.el (ffap-prefer-remote-file): New user option.
(ffap-file-exists-string): Add an optional argument to allow the
check of existence of absolute filename on the remote host.
(ffap-file-at-point): Always find remote files in remote context
if the new option is non-nil.

New customization variable `completion-eager-display'

The customization option can be set to t or nil, to respectively
always or never show the *Completions* buffer eagerly at the
beginning of a completion session. Furthermore the option can
be set to the value auto. In this case the *Completions* buffer
will only be shown if requested by the completion table.
Completion tables can use the `eager-display' completion
metadata to do so. (Bug#74616, Bug#74617)

Make ffap correctly guess remote file names at point

Teach ffap to look for relative file names under project-root
...
Now file-name-at-point-functions, which runs
ffap-guess-file-name-at-point, will pick up on a file name at point if
that file name is a relative file name which exists when looked up
from the root of the project.
For example, in test/lisp/progmodes/eglot-tests.el there is the string
lisp/progmodes/eglot.el; if you put point on that and C-x C-f,
lisp/progmodes/eglot.el under the root of the Emacs repo will now be
part of future history.

Drop support for the dead third-party w3 package

The w3 package was removed from GNU ELPA in 2020 as it doesn't run on
a recent Emacs, and development had stopped over a decade before that.
If anyone wants to revive the w3 package, they should look this all
over, but it doesn't make sense for us to maintain this support code.

Stop ffap-machine-at-point from pinging random hosts
...
Having this on by default is highly problematic from a security and
privacy standpoint, as it risks having outgoing traffic that could
potentially reveal sensitive data (passwords, names, etc.).
It also seems to be causing issues for users, see e.g.
