5b19ca56f1 Preserve selected candidate across *Completions* update
When *Completions* is updated and point was on some completion
candidate, move point to the same candidate after the update.

Also, a selected completion in *Completions* is now always
highlighted, even if it was selected by the user or other code
moving point rather than by minibuffer-next-completion, because
cursor-face-highlight-nonselected-window is now set in
completion-setup-function.

Other completion UIs (e.g. ido, vertico, etc) effectively have
this behavior: whenever they update the list of completions,
they preserve whatever candidate is selected. This matters a
lot when completions are auto-updated, but is still useful
without auto-updating. Including this behavior is a step
towards supporting auto-updating in the default completion UI.

* lisp/minibuffer.el (minibuffer-completion-help): Preserve the
selected completion candidate across updates. (bug#74019)
(minibuffer-hide-completions): Move point to BOB.
(minibuffer-next-completion): Don't set
cursor-face-highlight-nonselected-window.
* lisp/simple.el (completions--start-of-candidate-at)
(choose-completion): Extract the current-completion-finding code
into a separate function.
(completion-setup-function): Set
cursor-face-highlight-nonselected-window.
* etc/NEWS: Announce new behavior.

8903106bb7 Mark if-let and when-let obsolete
* lisp/subr.el (if-let*, when-let*, if-let, when-let): Mark
if-let and when-let obsolete (bug#73853 and elsewhere). Move
docstring text around so that if-let* and when-let* descriptions
no longer refer to if-let and when-let.

* etc/NEWS: Announce the change.

3cda1fdc3b Correctly include fixed strings before a prefix wildcard in PCM
In 03ac16ece4 I fixed a bug with the
PCM implementation of substring completion, relating to the handling
of PCM wildcards.
However, this fix was incomplete. This change completes the fix by
also including a fixed string if it appears before a 'prefix'
wildcard, even if 'try-completion' doesn't discover that fixed
string grows to a unique completion.
I discovered this bug while working on enhancements to PCM
completion related to 'completion-pcm-leading-wildcard'.

7c767ec781 Update completion-styles defcustom for variable overrides
In 69ec333eab I allowed
completion-styles to contain a list of bindings. Now the
'defcustom' type also supports this.
Since the type is somewhat unusual (a value in the list can be
either a symbol or a list) I had to add a new widget to support
it.

69ec333eab Allow customizing partial-completion to be more like substring
The substring completion style completes "foo-bar" as "*foo-bar*". The
partial-completion completion style completes "foo-bar" as "foo*bar*".

Previously, it was not possible to get completion of "foo-bar" to act as
"*foo*bar*", e.g. combining the partial-completion and substring styles.
This would be especially useful for things like project-find-file.

Now it is possible by customizing the completion-pcm-leading-wildcard variable
to a non-nil value.

Furthermore, it's convenient to be able to run
regular (completion-pcm-leading-wildcard=t, non-substring)
partial-completion before running completion-pcm-leading-wildcard=nil
partial-completion, since the former provides more narrowly targeted
completions.

It's possible to do this by customizing completion-styles. Just add
'(partial-completion ((completion-pcm-leading-wildcard t))) and
'(partial-completion ((completion-pcm-leading-wildcard nil))) in that
order. Then the completion machinery will first run partial-completion
with completion-pcm-leading-wildcard=t, and if that returns no
completions, run partial-completion with
completion-pcm-leading-wildcard=nil.

* lisp/minibuffer.el (completion--nth-completion): Allow an element of
completion-styles to contain a list of bindings.

7b60a25328 Fix 'partial-completion' for candidates containing newlines
'partial-completion' tries to match a pattern containing wildcards
(such as `any' or `prefix') against completion candidates.
Wildcards are supposed to match any sequence of characters, but
'completion-pcm--pattern->regex' transformed the wildcards into
".*", which won't match sequences containing newlines. Fix this to
properly match anything by using "[^z-a]*" instead.

9dcb28d601 With visible-completions, only bind RET when completion is selected
Previously, if minibuffer-visible-completions was non-nil, we bound RET
whenever the *Completions* buffer was visible. This meant that RET in
completion-in-region would not enter a newline, which is a somewhat
annoying behavior change from minibuffer-visible-completions=nil.

Now, we only bind RET when a completion is selected. This means
RET will newline in completion-in-region.

So that completion help continues to suggest the correct keys,
we also add minibuffer-visible-completions--always-bind.  When
let-bound to a non-nil value, it makes the
minibuffer-visible-completions binds always active. We let-bind
it around substitute-command-keys.

e33f560bad Add historical option to completions-sort
Support sorting candidates in *Completions* by the order they show up
in the minibuffer history.

Also add minibuffer-sort-alphabetically and
minibuffer-sort-by-history, which are usable for both completions-sort
and display-sort-function.

* lisp/minibuffer.el (completions-sort): Document 'historical option.
(minibuffer-completion-help): Support 'historical option.
(minibuffer-sort-alphabetically)
(minibuffer-completion-base, minibuffer-sort-by-history): Add.
* etc/NEWS: Announce it.

3c09314895 Deselect the selected completion candidate when typing
minibuffer-choose-completion-or-exit submits the selected completion
candidate, if any, ignoring the contents of the minibuffer. But a
user might select a completion candidate and then want to type
something else in the minibuffer and submit what they typed.

Now typing will automatically deselect the selected completion
candidate so that minibuffer-choose-completion-or-exit will not choose
it.

minibuffer-choose-completion has the same behavior as before, and is
not affected by the deselection.

* lisp/minibuffer.el (completion-auto-deselect, completions--deselect)
(completions--after-change): Add.
(minibuffer-completion-help): Add completions--after-change hook.
(minibuffer-next-completion): Bind completion-auto-deselect to nil to
avoid immediately deselecting the completion.
(minibuffer-choose-completion-or-exit): Bind
choose-completion-deselect-if-after so deselection takes effect.
(display-completion-list): Guarantee a newline at the beginning of
*Completions* to avoid ambiguity about candidate selection.
* lisp/simple.el (choose-completion-deselect-if-after): Add.
(choose-completion): Check choose-completion-deselect-if-after.
* etc/NEWS: Announce.

16ac377aab Forward completion text properties in 'completion-table-with-quoting'
This fixes an issue with 'pcomplete-here-using-help', which passes
annotation strings along as text properties. Previously, those got
clobbered when the completions got requoted (bug#67112).

* lisp/minibuffer.el (completion--twq-all): Apply text properties from
the first character of the unquoted completion to the quoted
completion.

d8c1ac6c35 Return t from completion-emacs22-try-completion only for completions
The emacs22 completion style ignores the text after point when
computing completions. However, it still needs to take into account
the entire string it's given, to avoid returning incorrect values.

Previously, completion-emacs22-try-completion would return t if the
text before point was an exact completion. But this is effectively
saying that the entire input string was an exact completion, which may
not be correct. This would cause completing-read with REQUIRE-MATCH=t
to return a non-completion.

Now, completion-emacs22-try-completion only returns t if the entire
input string is an exact completion.

* lisp/minibuffer.el (completion-emacs22-try-completion): Return t
only if the entire input string is an exact completion. (Bug#67210)

94763aa521 Enable completion-in-region-mode in minibuffer-complete-history/defaults
* lisp/minibuffer.el (minibuffer-complete-history)
(minibuffer-complete-defaults): Let-bind completion-in-region-mode-predicate
to lambda that checks if the "*Completions*" buffer window is visible.
This enables completion-in-region-mode that supports arrows

fff9b6e37a Fix test failures in test/lisp/minibuffer-tests.el
bug#48841, bug#47711

In some instances the test code needed to be updated to make different
assumptions about implementation details.

In others, like the ones about the completions-first-difference face,
minor parts of the actual user-visible behaviour were broken.

* test/lisp/minibuffer-tests.el (completion-test1): Robustify test.

Avoid keeping 'completion-in-region-mode' on when exiting

Otherwise, the bindings from 'completion-in-region-mode-map' linger,
notable shadowing other bindings for TAB.
