This new implementation opts *in* to treating characters as glob
characters, rather than opting out. This reduces the need to coordinate
with other parts of Eshell and should be harder to break (bug#74033).
* lisp/eshell/em-glob.el (eshell-parse-glob-chars): Return the
propertized globbing character directly.
(eshell--propertize-glob, eshell--glob-char-p)

directly.

tests.
(em-glob-test/convert/literal-characters)
(em-glob-test/convert/mixed-literal-characters): New tests.
This makes the built-in 'eshell/cat' 5-10x faster on large files in my
(somewhat limited) tests. In addition, this change periodically
redisplays when using the Eshell buffered output so that users can see
some progress.
* lisp/eshell/esh-io.el (eshell-print-queue-size, eshell-print-queue,
eshell-print-queue-count): Make obsolete in favor of...

(eshell-buffered-print-redisplay-throttle): New user option.
(eshell--buffered-print-next-redisplay): New variable.
(eshell-init-print-buffer): Make obsolete.
(eshell-flush): Add new REDISPLAY-NOW argument in favor of CLEAR (which
only 'eshell-init-print-buffer' should have used).
(eshell-buffered-print): Compare queued output length to
'eshell--buffered-print-current-size'.
(eshell-with-buffered-print): New macro.

Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs.
This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party,
planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org
instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving
away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and
fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against
man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and
MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down).
HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone
for now.
* lisp/eshell/em-ls.el (eshell-ls--insert-directory):
Append '("-d") into 'eshell-ls-dired-initial-args'
if 'dired-directory' is a cons or there are wildcars (Bug#27843).
* test/lisp/dired-tests.el (dired-test-bug27843): Add test.
Require em-glob inside 'ls-lisp--dired'. This is necessary to
not break the Emacs build.
See following thread for details:
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2017-07/msg01083.html
* lisp/ls-lisp.el (dired-goto-next-file)
(dired-read-dir-and-switches, eshell-extended-glob):
Add function declarations.
* lisp/eshell/em-ls.el (dired-goto-next-file): Fix function declaration.
Allow Dired to handle calls like
\(dired \"~/foo/*/*.el\"), that is, with wildcards within
the directory part of the file argument (Bug#27631).
* lisp/files.el (insert-directory-wildcard-in-dir-p): New predicate.
(insert-directory-clean): New defun extracted from insert-directory.
(insert-directory)
* lisp/dired.el (dired-internal-noselect)
(dired-insert-directory): Use the new predicate; when it's true,
handle the directory wildcards with a shell call.
* lisp/eshell/em-ls.el (eshell-ls-use-in-dired): Add/remove both advices.
(eshell-ls-unload-hook): New defun. Use it in
eshell-ls-unload-hook instead of an anonymous function.
(eshell-ls--dired)
* lisp/ls-lisp.el (ls-lisp--dired):
Advice dired to handle wildcards in the directory part with both
eshell-ls and ls-lisp.
* etc/NEWS: Announce it.
* doc/emacs/dired.texi (Dired Enter): Update manual.
* test/lisp/dired-tests.el (dired-test-bug27631): Add test.
This patch should not change behavior. It typically omits backslashes
where they are redundant (e.g., in the string literal "^\$").
In a few places, insert backslashes where they make regular
expressions clearer: e.g., replace "^\*" (equivalent to "^*") with
"^\\*", which has the same effect as a regular expression.
Also, use ‘\ %’ instead of ‘\%’ when avoiding confusion with SCCS IDs,
and similarly use ‘\ $’ instead of ‘\$’ when avoiding confusion with
RCS IDs, as that makes it clearer that the backslash is intended.
